HOW DID IT HAPPEN

What did I do:

I designed a diary template. I gave the printed template to 3 international students and asked them to keep record on their daily life. Each student got two pieces of paper. One was to record the weekday activities, and the second one was to write down the weekend activities.

Who are they:

From the students’ social performance, the three students are seen as three level of English speakers. Very-Fluent-English speaker, Fluent-English speaker and In uent-English speaker.

Outcomes:

Frequency of using English is similar.

1.Once the student has language barriers, the problems are everywhere.
2.The student has no idea how to connect to others who use English language.

3.During the group discussion, participants would ask questions to check if themselves understood others.
4.Students are not independently conscious and aware how to improve their language, because from the perspective of students living within own cultural circles, they focus only on their own nationality and language.

Insights:

Even though, they are living in an English- speaking county, it is still hard for them to use English as their everyday language. Depending on their home language, their life is divided into two parts.

For studying, they use English to communicate with classmates and school friends. After the university, they use their own language to communicate with friends who speak the same language. They make phone calls to their parents. They watch TV programs in their mother language.

Even the three students have different ability of English speaking, the frequency of using English is similar.
